Sometimes you just want a smaller frame on a larger piece. This larger, beautiful nude photo was framed in a slimmer white lacquer frame from Larson Juhl. As long as the frame has enough depth, you can use slim frames on larger pieces. We build another wooden frame that goes on the inside of the outer frame and it becomes the support system. The piece hangs off of the inner supportive frame and the outer frame becomes simply decorative, not having to support any of the weight.

Solid hardwoods are always a beautiful and classic choice for your custom framing. We use Picture Woods out of Colorado. This is the sepia oak in a slimmer, deeper profile so that we could make it into a shadowbox.

Have fun with color! More framing companies are coming out with new color lately and I love it. I feel like there were a few years of color drought. Here are 2 fun paintings that come alive even more with the addition of lively pops of color. These are both floating and framed with stacked Bella frames.

What do you do when you have an object to frame but the only frames that are deep enough don’t have the style you want? Our clients wanted a shadowbox that looked rustic with a driftwood feel. We took 2 frames from Engelsen, the smaller one on the face and the larger one turned on it’s side and glued under the smaller frame to create the depth we needed and the style the customer wanted. Then we lined the sides of the frame with the fun red color to match the tile. It’s adds a fun little color accent.

Newest painting by Kathy Gray. This beautiful bunny enjoying a cup of tea is double framed with a gold frame by Larson Juhl on the inside and surrounded by a teal Bella frame with a beautiful leaf pattern on the outside. We liked how the pattern on the lip of the gold frame echoed the pattern of the lace and the detail on the tea cup and teapot. I love how the sunlight comes through the ears!

Floater frames have become more and more popular these days. There is such a variety now. When you want a finished edge on your oil or acrylic painting and you don’t want to cover the edges, floater frames are a great choice. This contemporary still-life is framed in a floater frame from Larson Juhl. It has a hammered aluminum face with a slight bevel and darker wood sides, which give it more character.

Having a darker colored paper can present a challenge with picture framing. I often find that matching the frame color to the paper color can be a great way to go. Here we have an original Diego Rivera drawing that has a clean off white, 8-ply mat with a Picture Woods frame in Quartered Oak with a matte lacquer finish.

Simple doesn’t have to mean boring. The focus on this soft winter landscape would be taken away by a frame with too much carving or color. We used a larger Picture Woods frame in the maple with country gray stain. The maple grain is very soft and the gray stain just complements the color palette of the landscape.

A fillet can add a touch of color or detail to your piece without adding too much to the size. Here we used a fun white, carved Bella frame on this map of Disneyland. We added the little pink painted fillet for a pop of color. A fillet can take the place of a mat in some cases when you just want a little color or space between the art and the frame.

Color and pattern can make a big impact in your custom framing design choices. A simple black frame is frequently a go-to because it is so familiar, however with a few adjustments you can really change how a piece looks. On this lithograph we went with a navy blue lacquer frame with a fun pattern that compliments the flames dancing on the water and the bursts of light from the streetlights.
