We don’t tend to wear silk scarves out here on the West Coast, so what to do with those beautiful Hermes scarves … frame them to create a beautiful piece of art for your walls. When you frame a scarf it allows you to really appreciate the fun patterns and themes printed on them. We gently sew them just along the edges so if you ever wanted to take them out you can. They always keep their natural ripple so you can tell that it is a silk textile.

Wonderful Rembrandt etching! Here a client brought in a small Rembrandt etching and was originally interested in a more traditional gold gilded frame, however, we ended up with a more clean and contemporary design. We hand-wrapped a museum 8-ply mat with a subtly textured, neutral linen for a soft, but more dramatic look. Then we framed the etching with a solid ash moulding stained in city gray and made by Picture Woods. We used all museum quality products including Optium acrylic and voila!

What do you do with those cute ceramics that your kids make in school? Put them in sweet little shadowboxes and make a fun collage as an art display. Not only do you get to look at art that makes you smile everyday, it will also make your kids feel so proud and boost their self confidence by showing such appreciation for their creativity!

Turn a traditional frame into a floater frame! Sometimes you just don’t want to cover any edges of a painting and floater frames are often limited to simple styles. Here we have taken a shallow black floater frame and added a traditional gold leaf frame around it, creating a more unique floater frame. The 22kt gold frame made by CDNV has a beautiful rippled pattern along the edges that complements the motion and movement of the dancer in the painting.

Here is another piece that uses a fillet as a subtle decorative accent. A frame that is carved all over can sometimes overwhelm the art. Adding a complimentary fillet to the inside of a frame can give you that little detail that makes the framing more special and customized. The fillets can be plain or carved and they can also be painted!

This is a 60 x 30 colorful painting of a tree. The blue frame wasn’t enough so we added the fun pop of yellow on the inside and then it made the piece come more alive. The painted outer frame is made by Engelsen and the inner lacquer yellow frame is made by Omega.

Beautiful hand-painted goddess. Fabric mats and fillets are timeless. I don’t see framers using them as much anymore, however you can create a classic and sophisticated presentation that adds dimension and elegance to your art. It’s all in how you use them. Cleaner lines with less carving creates a more modern approach.

If you choose to use glass on your artwork and you are floating or not using at least an 8-ply mat, then the glass needs to be lifted off of your art to create an air space. Glass will trap moisture which can damage your art by allowing mold to grow inside the frame and stain your art.
We sometimes use this as an opportunity to add a little color or dimension to the function of the spacer. Here we made spacers out of coral colored matboard so we could add a subtle splash of color. Floating on a color mat can sometimes be too much for the art, but a little glimpse of color can be fun!

Using the right products for your custom framing is so important. Here is a piece that has severe acid burn and acid migration. To preserve your art you want to make sure that your framer is using materials that are labeled as conservation. 100% cotton rag mats are the best for mats and backing. The next step down is a conservation mat that is made of wood pulp which is treated to permanently remove harmful acids. The mat that was used on this piece was not acid free, so the acid in the board burned the paper underneath the mat and it then started to migrate towards the printed area of the art. To be safe, rag mats are what we reach for first. For color mats we use the conservation mat boards.
